Quiet headphones are also known as noise canceling headphones that actively cancel or block surrounding noise with their Active Noise Canceling technology. To reduce distracting background noise, Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) uses noise canceling technology. The technology relies on microphones that analyze noises both inside and outside the earphone, an ANC processor that inverts sound waves, and a speaker inside the earphone that cancels outside sound by generating neutral sound waves. Thanks to the ANC chipset, active noise cancellation can be addressed using a feed-forward ANC system, which places a microphone outside the earpiece, a feedback ANC system, which places a microphone inside the earpiece, or a hybrid ANC system, which combines the two ANC systems. Currently, silent headphones are used for listening to music, movies or sleeping.
