SKILLS FOR LIFE – FREE IT AND BUDGET SKILLS

We are a registered charity in Wolverhampton and have been active since 2019. We set up a food bank in response to Covid-19 and introduced the European Social Fund funded ‘Skills For Life’ project (distributed by Walsall Council) to those who lost their jobs during the pandemic. We have completed 2 projects and helped several people to acquire basic computer skills, the use of Microsoft Office, writing cover letters, writing CVs, administration and reception, job search , applications, interview preparation and soft skills.

We are currently running the 3rd and final ESF funded project where our clients learn how to manage their personal and professional budgets, communicate effectively in a workplace, take an aptitude test and create social media profiles to highlight showcase their skills in order to attract potential employers. We conducted surveys with our beneficiaries and service users of 6 local food banks that we support and found that interest in learning how to manage finances was very high due to the rising cost of living.

People who have suffered a loss of income due to layoffs due to the pandemic and those on benefits/low income have asked us to help them learn new skills so they can break free from cycles of dependency . Our projects have proven to be very beneficial to our clients as they provide them with the essential skills needed to progress to further education or enter the job market.

Our Skills For Life project is offered free of charge to anyone over the age of 16 and our clients come from different cultural backgrounds. We now aim to target the 16-25 age group to help them become resilient and financially independent.

Our team consists of an Administrator with a BA (Hons) degree in International Business Management, a Project Manager with 6 years of experience as a Pharma Operations Manager, over 17 years as as a school principal and a financial manager (member of the Association of Accounting Technicians) with more than 15 years of experience in managing large accounts. We hire qualified trainers to deliver the sessions in a fully equipped comfortable environment. Our clients have access to their own PC or laptop to use during the sessions and they also receive light refreshments while they learn. We also offer travel assistance for those who cannot afford to travel to attend the course.

We will offer short-term courses that will be tailored to clients’ needs after conducting an assessment of their current skills and abilities; this will cover all training areas mentioned. We will also seek to include any other learning that our customers may suggest or find useful. Our goal is to equip our clients with the skills they need to apply with confidence. We want them to be able to understand how to use technology in a safe and effective workplace, write a cover letter, prepare a CV, create social media profiles such as Facebook, Linkedin, Instagram and Twitter to search for jobs or showcase their skills to attract potential employers, apply for jobs, prepare them for a job interview and employee assessment test, perform administrative tasks, cover hospitality, process with customers/suppliers, drafting corporate budgets and working in a team. We also offer in-class and one-to-one support in different languages so that our clients can get the most out of learning.

If we reach the goal, we can start the new project in January 2023 and support more than 100 customers. The money will be used to cover training, administration, management, refreshments and travel costs for our clients taking the course.
